History of Sake

Sake appeared in Japan after the introduction of wet-rice cultivation around 300 B.C. However, it was only produced only in Imperial Courts and large temples. This is one of the reasons why sake is associated with Japanese rituals, mostly religious ones. Sake has been and is a very special beverage for the Japanese. This is apparent through the delicate and artful designs of sake sets usually crafted from ceramic or wood, which portray the history and tradition of sake.
